Bonds between atoms that allow the formation of chemical compounds. There are three main types of chemical bond: covalent bonds between nonmetal atoms; metallic bonds between metal atoms; and ionic bonds between nonmetal and metal elements. All chemical bonds are the result of outer shell electrons being gained, lost or shared, creating a strong electrostatic attraction between atoms.
